Slow and Steady Wins the Race as Coláiste Lorcáin Snatches the eFlow STAR at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2025
The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, held at the RDS from January 8th to 11th, 2025, celebrated a marvellous showcase of inventiveness, with students presenting innovative science projects across various disciplines.
One of the highlights of this year’s competition was Róisín O’Reilly, Akhila Thelakattu, and Claire O’Sullivan from Coláiste Lorcáin, Castledermot, Kildare, securing the eFlow STAR (Sustainable Transport Award and Recognition). Their winning project, titled “Educate to Decelerate” provided research which proves driving faster doesn’t save us that much time but increases the chance of road deaths.
The students from Coláiste Lorcáin in Kildare conducted exploratory and quantitative research, examining existing research, conducting a survey, and analysing media. Their study wanted to raise awareness in their community, particularly amongst young drivers, that speeding doesn’t actually save them that much time, but it does increase the risk of road deaths.

The eFlow STAR, presented to Coláiste Lorcáin, recognises outstanding achievement in scientific research, innovation and community impact within the realm of transportation.
Róisín Barton-Murray, Public Information and Enforcement Manager at Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) who presented the eFlow STAR to the winners on behalf of eFlow stated, “We’re proud to support the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition and witness the talent, creativity, and dedication of students each year. TII is delighted for the opportunity to invest in the next generation of problem-solvers tackling challenges like safety and sustainability.”
